TMJ, Jaw Pain & Facial Tension Treatment

Relief for jaw pain, facial pain, headaches and persistent neck tension

What if the pain you're feeling in your jaw, face or neck isn't where the problem began?

At Visage Therapy Centre, we look beyond the painful area to explore the wider patterns of muscular tension, fascial restriction, jaw function and neck alignment.

The jaw, cranial muscles, upper neck and surrounding fascia work together. When these tissues become tense or restricted, they can contribute to facial discomfort, headaches, jaw clicking, clenching and persistent neck pain.

Our approach combines specialised cranial, facial and neck therapy, including gentle intraoral techniques (treatment inside the mouth), where appropriate, to help restore comfortable movement and reduce muscular tension.

We don't just look at where it hurts. We explore what may be contributing to the pain.

Did You Know Your Neck Pain Could Be Connected to Your Jaw?

Many people experiencing persistent neck pain focus entirely on their neck and shoulders.

But the muscles involved in chewing, jaw movement and facial tension also interact with the muscles and structures of the upper neck.

At Visage, we use specialised cranial and intraoral therapy to work with tension in the jaw and surrounding facial muscles.

By addressing these areas alongside the neck, occipital /C0 and Atlas/C1 region, we aim to improve mobility, reduce muscular guarding and support more comfortable movement.

Sometimes, helping your neck means looking beyond your neck.

Intraoral Therapy – Treating Jaw, Facial and Neck Tension from Within

Sometimes, the muscles contributing to your discomfort need to be reached from inside the mouth.

Persistent jaw tension, facial pain, headaches and neck tightness can be connected. Intraoral therapy allows a trained practitioner to access specific muscles involved in chewing and jaw movement that can be difficult to reach externally.

What is intraoral therapy?

Intraoral therapy is a specialised hands-on technique involving gentle work inside the mouth, using gloved hands to assess and treat accessible muscles, including the medial pterygoid.

Treatment is tailored to your symptoms, comfort and individual needs.

How can jaw tension affect your neck?

The jaw, face and neck work together to coordinate movement and support the head. Clenching, muscle tension and stress may contribute to discomfort across these areas, sometimes alongside headaches or facial pain.

At Visage Therapy Centre, we consider how the jaw, cranial region and neck may interact rather than focusing solely on where you feel pain.

How can intraoral therapy help?

Depending on the cause of your symptoms, treatment may help to:

  • Ease muscular tenderness and jaw tension.

  • Treat tight fascia.

  • Improve comfort when opening and closing the mouth.

  • Support more comfortable jaw movement.

  • Address muscular contributors to certain facial pains and headaches.

  • Complement treatment for jaw-related neck discomfort.

Results vary, and intraoral therapy isn't suitable for everyone.

Our approach at Visage Therapy Centre

We take an individual approach, considering the relationship between your jaw, facial muscles and neck, including the upper cervical region around the Atlas (C1), where appropriate.

Your treatment may combine external hands-on techniques with intraoral therapy and other suitable approaches to support comfort and movement.

How It Works

Every session takes you a little further. Every home exercise helps you continue the work. There is no pressure to complete a set number of treatments - we work at your body’s pace, and you decide how far you’d like to go.

One important distinction: I wouldn’t advertise 50 phases unless you have a defined 50-stage treatment programme. Instead, describe the approximately 50 areas you assess and work with, because that better explains the depth of your approach without making clients think they need 50 appointments.

And I’d avoid promising that every session takes someone further, since progress can vary. A slightly safer closing line would be:

Each session builds on your individual needs, with home exercises to support your progress between visits. No fixed programme, no pressure - just personalised care at your own pace.
